Wylie Swim Club now offers swim lessons!
Meet the instructor. Christina Dickey has 36 years of experience with the American Red Cross. She was certified as a swimming instructor, lifeguard, swimming instructor trainer, lifeguard instructor trainer, Advanced First Aid and CPR instructor trainer. She coached swimming in Japan for a team of 95 children and was the assistant coach 1 year for the Abilene/Cooper High School team. Your children will reap the benefits of her vast experience!
Policies:
- Be on time! Make-up lessons or refunds are not given if a class is missed. Time is limited.
- Lessons are not admittance to the pool. Your child will benefit from practice so please enroll as a member of the Wylie Swim Club to ensure your child’s success!
- Weather is unpredictable and impacts outdoor pools. We will contact you if there is a need to cancel. We will try to provide a make-up class on a Friday within the scheduled two-week timeframe.
- There are no lifeguards. Each class a parent will be asked to be extra eyes on the students while Christina teaches. Your child’s safety is of the utmost importance, therefore attention by another is a must.
- Children learn best when they focus on one teacher at a time. Therefore, let Christina instruct! Please, if your child isn’t listening or misbehaves let her handle it. If she needs to call you over, she will. Often a child needs a bathroom break, and the parent will accompany their child.
- Swim diapers are a must for babies and toddlers who are not yet toilet trained.
- Being an outdoor pool, it is recommended to put a long-sleeved pool shirt on your child for warmth and sun protection. Additionally, for the baby and toddler classes please put brimmed hats on them to shade their eyes. Parents, this being a Christian church facility, one-piece swimsuits or two-pieces that cover and hide the entire torso are required for females and loose-fitting swim trunks for males. If in doubt, wear a long t-shirt over the swimsuit please. A wholesome family environment is what the facility focuses on. We ask for modest dress attire for our swimmers since we are a Christian facility. Most importantly, when children are afraid they grab and pull. For the parent in the water with their child, in order to avoid an embarrassing situation, if the swimsuit is a two-piece or low cut, please consider wearing a T-shirt.
- Any child with long hair, please pull it back into a ponytail or into a swim cap. It gets into the child’s eyes and mouth as they are trying to learn skills.
- Most sun blocks require drying time so please apply before you leave home. Remember a large towel. In the classes where a parent is with the child, please remember a towel for you too.
- A note to WSC members: Please note that the pool will still be open to WSC members before, during, and after the swim lessons. As the lessons will only take up a small corner of the shallow end of the large pool (this area will be clearly marked), the vast majority of the pool space is still dedicated to serving our valued pool members during the swim lessons. We appreciate your understanding!
What to expect:
- Ms. Christina will evaluate your child to ensure he/she is in the proper class.
- Water safety skills will be taught at each level, even those where the parent is part of the class.
- Initially, children are encouraged to adapt to the water without goggles. They become a crutch and are often a distraction as they learn. Parents, you may have them in your bag but allow the learning process.
- Christina is enthusiastic about instructing swimming and will be encouraging and establish trust so that each child will want to participate. Sometimes children want to watch others perform a skill before they try it, and this is totally okay. Each child progresses at their own pace.
